The house in Borowce stands empty. People talk about Father Jaworek's curse. "The prophecy has come true."
"Anna comes by every now and then. She opens the windows, mows the lawn, and disappears," they say in Borowce. They're not surprised that no one wants to live there. They recall Anna washing fratricidal blood from the floors and walls.
On the night of July 9-10, 2021, Jacek Jaworek killed his younger brother Janusz (†44), sister-in-law Justyna (†44), and their son Jakub (†17). He eluded a police manhunt for four years. He committed suicide on July 19, 2024. He was found dead at a recreation complex in Dąbrowa Zielona.
Today, it is known that he was hiding at the time with his aunt in Dąbrowa Zielona, just five kilometers from Borowce. The District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa has filed an indictment against Jaworka's aunt in the court in Myszków. Her trial will begin soon. She faces five years in prison for hiding her nephew. The people of Borowce breathed a sigh of relief. For them, this story is slowly coming to an end. In their opinion, it began with Stanisław Jaworka (†80), the father of the feuding brothers.
Borowce remembers Jacek Jaworek's father. His son took after him."He just laughed: 'Let them kill each other, I'll be gone,'" people in Borowce say about Jacek Jaworek's father, who refused to divide his inheritance among his children at the end of his life. These words were a dark prophecy that came true years later. The war over the home was the spark of a family conflict that culminated in a fratricidal massacre in 2021. Only 13-year-old Gianni, the youngest son of the victims of the tragedy, survived.
Older neighbors of the Jaworka family recall advising Stanisław before his death to divide his inheritance, house, and fields, among his three children—Jacek, Anna, and Janusz. However, Stanisław didn't make a will. And it was his absence that was to divide the brothers. Today, people in Borowce say that the tragedy of four years ago is like Stanisław Jaworka's curse from beyond the grave. "Like father, like son," they recall in Borowce. In their opinion, the tragedy hung by a thread. "Jacek took after his father," relatives say. "His father fought with everyone; he had to get his way. Jacek was the same way," they add.
What Divided the Brothers? The Story of Jacek Jaworek's Feud with His Younger BrotherStanisław Jaworek died in 2016. Justyna and Janusz (Jacek's younger brother) cared for their ailing father until his death. They were in Poland at the time, having returned to Poland after a stay in Italy, where Janusz suffered a stroke. They settled in on their father's land, but financial matters remained unresolved between the siblings.
In October 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic broke out, Jacek returned from emigration to his hometown. He had been working abroad, a successful construction worker. The pandemic caused him to lose his contracts. No one was waiting for him in Częstochowa, as he was divorcing his wife and his eldest daughter was suing him for child support. His younger brother provided him with shelter in Borowce.
Relatives hoped that Jacek would soon return to work abroad and everything would return to normal. However, the situation became complicated. Jacek was unemployed and jailed for child support. He suspected that his younger brother had deliberately reported him to the police to get him out of the house. Conflicts escalated. Justyna and Janusz filed a lawsuit to divide their assets. The first hearing took place a month before the tragedy. Jacek shot them on the night of July 9th to 10th. Since then, no one has lived in the house.
A troublesome inheritance. Nobody wants to live there."Will anyone want to live there? So much time has passed..." wonders a relative of the Jaworks. She asks that her name not be revealed because these are sensitive matters, and she doesn't want to get involved. The ill-fated inheritance went to Jawork's three adult children, his sister, and Gianni, the son of the murdered couple. Five people in total. "How should we divide it?" the relative wonders. "Nobody wants to repeat what happened these days. Let the house wait... Maybe in time the family situation will mature; right now it's all too fresh," adds our interlocutor.
Gianni lives with his aunt in Silesia. "Despite everything, he loves this place," says Iwona, who takes care of Gianni, about Borowce and Gianni's family home. "He spent his childhood here. He still has friends he enjoys returning to and spending time with," Gianni's aunt notes. "Time doesn't heal wounds. We have the graves of our loved ones there, and memories keep coming back. But we have to live. What will happen next? Time will tell," adds Iwona.
Jacek Jaworek (†55) committed suicide. He had been in hiding for three years. He killed three people.
